The Winter Solstice
冬至是二十四节气之一。在冬至日前后,太阳直射南回归线,对于北半球而言,冬至日前后是一年中白昼时间最短的日子。北半球有很多节日也都在12月中下旬,如圣诞节、光明节等。
The Winter Solstice is one of the 24 solar periods. Around that day, the Sun shines directly on the Tropic of Capricorn. For the northern hemisphere, the Winter Solstice is the day with the shortest period of daylight and longest night of the year, when the Sun is at its lowest daily maximum elevation in the sky. Many festivals in the northern hemisphere are also in late December such as Christmas and Hanukkah.

In Northern China, dumplings are an essential holiday food for every family on the Winter Solstice; however, China has a vast territory which makes the geographical environment and eating habits of the South and North quite different. Tangyuan (rice dumpling), mutton soup, as well as fermented glutinous rice are also popular festive foods in certain areas.

The Nine Periods
(of Nine Days Each)
Following the Winter Solstice
冬至并不是一年中最冷的一天,冬至后人们开始“数九”,即从冬至开始,每九天为“一九”,一直数到“九九”,共计八十一天。当寒冷的冬天被“数完”时,温暖的春天就来了。
The Winter Solstice is not the coldest day of the year. After the Winter Solstice, people begin to “count nines”: from the winter solstice, every nine days is "one nine", and once "nine nines", or a total of 81 days, has been counted, then the warm spring is said to come.

The Winter Solstice indicates the coming of the winter, but just as Percy Bysshe Shelley says in his poem Ode to the West Wind, "If winter comes, can spring be far behind?" Let's eat delicious dumplings with our families and look forward to the coming spring together.
